Bollywood star Sridevi Kapoor, one of the biggest figures in Hindi cinema, passed away aged 54 after suffering a heart attack in Dubai, her former manager Punkej Kharbanda said on Sunday.
The death of the beloved superstar, reportedly occurring at her nephew's wedding in the emirate on Saturday, triggered waves of condolences and tributes from fans on Chinese social media platforms.
"Can't believe the news…She was so radiantly beautiful in English Vinglish," wrote Sina Weibo user Leguan Movie on Sunday.
"One of my favorite Indian actresses… the news is so sudden," netizen Buzuo Liuxing posted on Sina Weibo.
"She was so, so beautiful when she was young, R.I.P." wrote Sina Weibo user Kadirya.
Many Chinese fans first came to know the Indian actress via the 1987 Mr. India, which featured Kapoor as Seema Soni, a "fiery" journalist.
The film, dubbed in Putonghua (Standard Chinese), was once screened in some Chinese mainland cinemas and on TV in the early 1990s, becoming some Chinese movie lovers' best childhood memories.
"I watched the film when I was in primary school… still remember how the heroine walks on the shattered glass, really impressive," wrote Douban user Miss 1708.
