Shenzhen (CNS) -- Thirty Internet users visited the Daya Bay Nuclear Power Plant in South China's Shenzhen city ahead of the second anniversary of the Fukushima nuclear disaster in Japan.
Aimed at dispelling public fears, China Guangdong Nuclear Power Group (CGNPG) selected through its official blog on Sina 30 science-loving netizens to visit the nuclear plant, including white-collar workers, civil servants, columnists and medical students.
Standing on a sightseeing platform, less than 100 meters away from the plant, engineer Huang Rongxu told visitors that with three security barriers, the radiation there is at a low level occurring with natural radioactivity.
Huang then led them to the training center and said 400 exams must be passed to become an operator at a nuclear plant and five years of training to become a qualified operator, no easier than training for a pilot.
Visitors also visited the control room, the heart of the plant, after strict security checks and passing through two doors. Nearly half the equipment at the plant is installed for safety and environmental protection, an expert told visitors.
The public can visit the nuclear plants, and knowing about nuclear power can foster a rational attitude, CGNPG said.
