Beijing (CNS) -- Altogether 198 websites in China, including App Store, have been investigated and/or penalized for obscene and pornographic content, a publishing watchdog has said.
A campaign aimed at "clarifying the internet" has been implemented since March, the Office of the National Work Group for "Combating Pornography and Illegal Publications" said on Tuesday.
Apple's App Store in China and 61 other websites have been ordered to clean up their content, the office said.
Twenty-one unlicensed websites have been shut down, and two others are under ongoing investigation for providing online porn and obscene stories to mobile users, it said.
The campaign will last till the end of May.
