Beijing (CNS) -- Security checks on public transport systems across the country are being tightened in the wake of a deadly bus explosion last Friday in Xiamen, Southeast China's Fujian province.

As an effort to improve the safety of bus operations, all 165 Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) buses in Xiamen will be equipped with automatic glass-breaking apparatus, which would crack four panes of glass, to allow passengers to escape, according to Xiamen Mayor Liu Keqing on Tuesday.

Many cities have followed suit by raising the security check levels in their public transport systems.

The Beijing Public Security Bureau tightened security at busy bus stations and ordered baggage checks and checks on liquid items.

In Urumqi, capital of the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, security officers have been assigned to transit stations since Sunday. Passengers now have to drink bottled water and other beverages they carry into stations if security machines can't identify the liquid.

In Nanjing, capital of Jiangsu province, more law enforcement officers are stationed at metro stations, where scanners have been installed to check for explosives, liquids and metals.

The fire on Xiamen's BRT system, which killed 47 and injured 34, was allegedly started after gasoline was ignited by Chen Shuizong, a disgruntled Xiamen native, the joint investigation by the Ministry of Public Security and the Fujian provincial public security department found. Chen also died in the blaze that engulfed the bus with 90 passengers on board.
