(ECNS) - Nearly 60 percent of medical staff in China suffered verbal abuse in 2014, according to a white paper released Wednesday.
The Chinese Medical Doctor's Association released the white paper as an analysis of the work environment of the nation's doctors in 2009, 2011 and 2014. The paper covers a variety of topics, including work hours, health, income, workplace violence and insurance, the Beijing Times reported.
According to the white paper, 52.72 percent of doctors work between 40 and 60 hours a week on average, and 32.69 percent work more than 60 hours a week. Overtime is a common practice, and the higher ranked a doctor is, the more likely they work overtime.
In 2014, 65.9 percent of doctors were not satisfied with their income, of which 19.1 percent were "very unsatisfied." The overall dissatisfaction rate of medical staff dropped, while only 6.15 percent of doctors had a monthly income over 10,000 yuan (about $1,613).
In 2014, 59.8 percent of medical staff suffered verbal abuse and another 13.1 percent were hurt physically. The remaining 27.1 percent say they never encountered violent incidents.
