Chinese team transforms straw into new bio-based high-fiber food thickener

(ECNS) -- A research team led by academician Yu Shuhong developed a new bio-based high-fiber food thickener by isolating cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) from straw, opening up new possibilities for the efficient utilization of agricultural waste, according to the Institute of Advanced Technology of the University of Science and Technology of China on Tuesday.

This new bio-based thickener delivers enhanced performance, offering greater thickening efficiency than commercial alternatives at a lower cost.

These CNFs ensure stable thickening under varying PH levels and extreme temperature conditions, making them highly promising for widespread applications in the food industry.

According to Shao Meng, a lead researcher, the new thickener has passed food safety tests and can provide dietary fiber to the human body.

Shao noted that the team has achieved the world's first large-scale production of CNFs at the metric ton level and is currently collaborating with food companies in practical application.

This innovative technology not only offers a new approach to the efficient utilization of agricultural waste but also opens new avenues for increasing farmers’ incomes, said Shao.
