China's military procuratorate said on Monday that the toppled late former senior military leader Xu Caihou received "timely and sufficient medical care" during his corruption investigation before he died on Sunday.

"Authorities paid great attention to treatment for Xu Caihou. After the authorities officially launched his graft investigation, he was treated well in the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) General Hospital under surveillance," military prosecutors were quoted by the PLA Daily as saying on Monday.

Xu, former vice chairman of China's Central Military Commission, died of bladder cancer on Sunday.

In a separate commentary published Monday, the PLA Daily slammed rumors that Xu died from political persecution or inadequate treatment, while pledging that the investigation into his accomplices will continue as the military has vowed to deepen the anti-graft drive and cleanse the army.

According to China's Criminal Procedure Law, military prosecutors halted the charges against Xu as he died during the prosecution process, but would deal with his alleged ill-gotten wealth according to law.

The military has disclosed two lists of a total of 30 senior military officers under investigation this year in January and March.

The move demonstrated its strong determination to fight corruption in the military. It chose to expose the "internal scandals" rather than to conceal them, which were previously considered "highly sensitive" and may tarnish its image, the PLA Daily said in the commentary.

Xu Caihou was found taking advantage of his position to assist the promotion of others, accepting huge amount of bribes personally and through his family.

Separately, Zhou Ruijin, former deputy editor-in-chief of People's Daily, published an opinion piece on the anti-graft campaign on business magazine Caijing on Monday.

"Xu was closely connected with former security chief Zhou Yongkang and then-vice chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference National Committee Ling Jihua, who have been put under investigation, as well as Bo Xilai, who was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2013," he wrote.
