(ECNS) --Liuban Lopez, a Spanish language teacher from Cuba who rescued a drowning child and a woman in Beijing last month, told China News Network that he feels very happy living in China, because the country “treats him like a son”.
Lopez has been living in China for 14 years. He married a Chinese woman and they have a boy. The Spanish language teacher said his Chinese colleagues and neighbors are very friendly and nice, so he always feels a sense of harmony and closeness, which was one of the reasons why he decided to settle in this country.
On April 30, Lopez and his family were taking a stroll in the Binhe Park in Beijing when they heard urgent cries for help from a river in the park. A woman was holding a young boy and crying for help loudly as their heads were bobbing up and down in the water.
Without hesitation, Lopez jumped into the river and pushed the woman and the child onto the bank. Soaked from head to toe, Lopez quietly left the scene with his family after seeing the woman and the boy were safe.
After his heroic act was shared online, he received a lot of gratitude and praise from Chinese netizens. Lopez said he hopes to take this chance to spread the concept of mutual assistance and solidarity.
Lopez came to China after the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Over the past 14 years, he has witnessed the rapid development of this country. In his eyes, China has become increasingly open and inclusive, with significant progress in various sectors.
“People's wages and living standards have greatly improved as well,” he said.
When asked about why he chose to be a language teacher, Lopez said the dedication and enthusiasm of Chinese students in learning Spanish touched him. As a teacher at China Foreign Affairs University, Lopez said he hopes he could contribute to communication and exchanges between China and Spanish-speaking countries to the best of his abilities.
