Divers on Monday recovered the second black box, a cockpit voice recorder (CVR), of the Lion Air plane that plunged into waters off western Indonesia on Oct. 29, killing all 189 people on board, a senior government official said.
A joint force diver team from Indonesian Navy and National Transport Safety Committee found the black box of brand new Boeing 737 Max 8 in the sea floor around the location of the crash site, spokesman of Indonesian Transport Ministry Hengky Angkasawan revealed.
"The CVR was recovered this morning (Monday) by the team. Now, the cockpit voice recorder has been lifted from the sea floor and now is in a ship heading to ashore," he told Xinhua over phone.
Hengky said the black box of the aircraft with flight number JT 6-10, which plunged into the waters just shortly after taking off, will be handed over to the transport safety committee for investigation.
The recovery of the cockpit voice recorder, recording the conversation of pilot and co-pilot just before the fatal crash, is looked to help unveil the definitive cause of the crash.
In November, divers recovered flight data recorder of the fatal flight at the sea floor near the cashed site.
The preliminary report based on information gleaned from the flight data recorder unveiled that the pilots struggle to control the plane's anti-stalling system just before the plane plunged into the water.
The Lion Air plane dove into the water 13 minutes after taking off from Soekarno Hatta international airport in Banten province on a scheduled one-hour flight to Pangkal Pinang of Bangka Island.
