South-to-North Water Diversion Project, China's "Water lifeline", has three routes, the eastern route from Jiangsu province's Yangzhou to Tianjin and Shandong province's Yantai and Weihai, the middle route from the Danjiangkou Reservoir to Beijing, and the planned western route which will divert water from the Yangtze River to the Yellow River.
The project, linking the Yangtze River, the Huaihe River, the Yellow River and the Haihe River, has allocated abundant water resources from the south to the country's parched north in order to ease the water shortage in the Huang-Huai-HaiRiver Basin.
The project was launched in 2002. The first phase of the eastern and middle routes was completed in 2014, and put into operation in 2022. A total of 155 design units have been completed over the past ten years.
Up to now, the first phase of the eastern and middle routes has transferred over 57.6 billion cubic meters of water from the south to more than 280 counties and urban areas in over 40 major cities including Beijing and Tianjin, benefiting 150 million people.
The project has made the development of many northern cities no longer constrained by water shortage. It also provides green energy for local areas. By the end of 2021, the project has generated nearly 29 billion kWh of hydro-power, equivalent to reducing carbon dioxide emissions of over 23 million metric tons. Water is the source of life and civilization. Over the past decade, the South-to-North Water Diversion Project has profoundly improved the relationship between human and water resources. It will continue to safeguard China's water resources.
