Xinjiang Hami pumped-storage power station project, run by State Grid Xinyuan Co., Ltd., is located in the eastern Tianshan Mountains in northwest China's Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. It is the second pumped-storage power station under construction in Xinjiang and the first in eastern Xinjiang.
The project comprises a lower reservoir, upper reservoir, water transmission system, underground factory, and ground switching station.
When the grid's power supply is low, surplus power can be pumped upward to the reservoir to store energy. During the peak power consumption, water is released to the reservoir to generate electricity. The regulation and protection of the grid will be realized through the cycle, which is equivalent to a super power bank of the grid.
The project is expected to be put into operation in 2028. It will mainly undertake the development, consumption, and delivery of wind and electric energy in the Tuha Basin of eastern Xinjiang, so the new energy power supply will be more stable.
After being put into use, it can reduce raw coal consumption by about 239,000 metric tons per year, reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 596,000 metric tons, and adjust the ecological environment in the Hami region, contributing to peaking carbon dioxide emissions and achieving carbon neutrality.
