The hydropower station is located on the downstream of Jinsha River, straddling southwestern provinces of Yunnan and Sichuan.
With a total installed capacity of 16 million kilowatts, the hydropower station will be the second largest hydropower station in the world ranking after Three Gorges Dam after the project is fully finished. It is equipped with 16 hydro-generating units, each with a capacity of 1 million kilowatts, the largest single-unit capacity in the world.
