(ECNS) -- China has urged the U.S. to "find no more excuses and immediately correct the wrongdoings" in its trade practices after the World Trade Organization (WTO) ruled that China has the right to impose tariffs on U.S. goods, according to the Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) on Thursday.
The World Trade Organization on Wednesday said China could impose $645 million of compensatory tariffs against the U.S. over the latter's anti-subsidy tariffs on Chinese goods.
According to the MOFCOM, the victory is of great significance to correct illegal countervailing practices against China, safeguard the legitimate trade interests of Chinese enterprises, and defend the multilateral trading system.
The ruling once again proved that the U.S. has long violated WTO rules, abused trade remedy measures, and refused to fulfill its international obligations ordered by WTO or stipulated in WTO rules, said the spokesman for the MOFCOM Gao Feng, adding that this has seriously damaged the fair and just international trade environment.
China has attached great importance to the international rule of law in stabilizing global economic and trade order, as well as regulating global economic and trade relations. It will also pay close attention to the following measures of the U.S, and reserve its rights to take further actions in order to maintain the authority of the multilateral trading system, the spokesperson added.
It is the second time that China has been granted a favorable ruling by the WTO concerning trade retaliation against the U.S.
Previously, China was authorized to slap $3.579 billion retaliatory tariffs over U.S. goods.
