(100 great changes) South China's Hainan creates paradise for rare species

This is a plant kingdom. With a forest coverage rate of nearly 96 percent, the place is dotted with tropical rainforests, and forests of South Asian pine, eucalyptus, Acacia mangium Willd and Caribbean pine.

It is also an animal paradise. Eld's deer, a "rare treasure," roam freely in the wilderness. And Hainan gibbons, "the loneliest relatives of mankind," gibber in the jungle — only 36 of them are left in the world.

It is also a place of culture with joyful bamboo pole dances, cheerful long table banquets, and various Li and Miao ethnic customs.

This is Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park. Located in the hinterland of South China's Hainan Island, the park covers a total area of 4,269 square kilometers, or about one eighth of the island's total land area. It boasts the most concentrated, best preserved and largest contiguous tropical rainforests in China.

In order to restore the rainforest ecosystem and build a biodiversity protection network, Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park has launched the "Smart Rainforest" project since 2021, and plans to build an integrated ground-to-air monitoring system within five years. According to statistics, the park is home to 133 plants and 145 animals that are key state-protected wildlife species. As of October 2022, at least 28 new species have been discovered here, and many animals and plants that once disappeared have returned.

Surrounded by fairyland-like scenery, the National Park will continue to adhere to the idea that "lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets" and build a green ecological shield for the sustainable development of Hainan Province.
